Excavation Services in Michigan
Professional excavation, grading, and site preparation for turf installations, hardscape projects, drainage systems, and complete outdoor transformations across Michigan.
Excavation Done Right Means Everything Else Lasts
Every outdoor project starts below the surface. Whether you are installing artificial turf, building a paver patio, correcting drainage problems, or reshaping your yard's grade, the excavation work determines how well the finished product performs and how long it lasts. Cut corners on site prep and you will be dealing with settling, pooling water, and shifting surfaces within a year.
At Great Lakes Synthetic Turf, excavation is not an afterthought -- it is the first and most critical phase of every project we take on. We own our equipment and run every excavation in-house, which means consistent quality control from the first bucket of soil removed to the final grade check. No subcontractors, no hand-off between companies, no communication gaps.
Michigan's soil conditions vary dramatically by region. Kent County's heavy clay drains poorly and expands during freeze-thaw cycles. Sandy lakeside soils shift and erode. Rocky glacial deposits in Northern Michigan require specialized breaking. We have worked in all of these conditions across the state and adapt our excavation approach to match what is actually under your property, not a generic playbook.
Excavation Services We Provide
From small backyard dig-outs to full property regrading, we handle excavation at every scale.
Turf Site Preparation
Removal of existing sod, topsoil, and organic material down to stable subgrade -- typically 4 to 6 inches. We grade for proper drainage and install the compacted stone base that every turf installation requires.
Grading and Leveling
Correcting slopes, filling low spots, and establishing proper drainage grades across your property. We use laser levels and grade stakes to achieve precise elevations that direct water away from foundations and toward drainage infrastructure.
Hardscape Excavation
Digging and preparing bases for patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits, and outdoor kitchens. Hardscape requires precise depth and compaction to prevent settling and cracking after installation.
Drainage Trenching
Trenching for French drains, channel drains, catch basins, and downspout routing. We handle the excavation and rough-in so water management systems work from day one.
Land Clearing
Removing brush, stumps, roots, and debris to prepare a site for new construction or landscaping. We clear to grade and haul away all material so you start with a clean surface.
Soil Removal and Haul-Off
Complete removal and disposal of excavated material. We handle the logistics of trucking soil off-site so you are not left with piles of dirt in your yard or driveway.
How We Handle Excavation
Every excavation starts with a site assessment. We evaluate your soil type, existing grade, drainage patterns, underground utilities, and access points before any equipment arrives. This step prevents surprises mid-project and allows us to give you an accurate quote upfront.
We mark all underground utilities using Michigan's MISS DIG 811 system before breaking ground. Gas lines, water mains, electrical conduit, and communication cables are located and flagged. This is a non-negotiable safety step that some contractors skip to save time.
During excavation, we use compact equipment sized appropriately for the project. Residential backyards do not need a full-size excavator tearing up the lawn and driveway. Our mini excavators and skid steers fit through standard gate openings and minimize disruption to the surrounding landscape.
After excavation, we compact the subgrade, verify grades with a laser level, and prepare the surface for whatever comes next -- whether that is a drainage stone base for turf, aggregate for pavers, or fill for regrading. Every site is left clean, with all excavated material hauled off or redistributed as specified.

Excavation FAQ
For standard artificial turf installations, we excavate 4 to 6 inches below the finished grade. This removes existing sod, topsoil, and organic material to reach stable subgrade. The excavated depth is then filled with compacted drainage stone that serves as the turf's foundation. Sites with poor drainage or heavy clay soils may require additional depth to accommodate extra stone base.
Yes. We contact Michigan MISS DIG 811 before every excavation project. All underground utilities -- gas, electric, water, sewer, and communications -- are located and marked before any digging begins. This is a legal requirement in Michigan and a safety step we never skip.
All excavated material is loaded and hauled off-site as part of our standard service. We do not leave piles of dirt on your property. If the soil is clean and usable, it can be redistributed to other areas of your yard for regrading purposes -- we will discuss this option during the site assessment if it makes sense for your project.
Our mini excavators and compact skid steers fit through standard residential gate openings as narrow as 36 inches. For properties with no gate access, we can work through the house side yard or use alternative entry points. We assess access during the site visit and plan equipment routing to minimize impact on your existing landscape, driveway, and neighboring properties.
