Turf for Historic Fishtown and the Northern Peninsula
Leland is a village of approximately 350 year-round residents on the northwest coast of the Leelanau Peninsula, famous for its historic Fishtown district where weathered shanties along the Leland River house shops and a working commercial fishery. The village sits between Lake Michigan to the west and Lake Leelanau to the east, serving as the departure point for the Manitou Island Transit ferry to North and South Manitou Islands.
About 95 miles from our White Cloud headquarters, Leland is served as the northernmost point of our Leelanau Peninsula coverage. We schedule Leland projects alongside Suttons Bay, Omena, and Traverse City work to maximize crew efficiency on the northern route. The M-22 corridor provides scenic but direct access to the village.
Leland's dual-water geography -- Lake Michigan on one side and Lake Leelanau on the other -- creates a microclimate that is both moderated by lake temperatures and intensified by moisture from both directions. Sandy soils dominate the area, and the wind exposure from Lake Michigan makes natural lawn maintenance particularly difficult on the west-facing properties. The village's economy depends heavily on seasonal tourism, making property appearance a direct business consideration.
